A documentary about everyday American life in a desert town community.
Welcome to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Welcome to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Originally known as Hot Springs, the town took its name (usually shortened to “TorC”) in 1950. Ralph Edwards, host of the celebrated Truth or Consequences radio quiz show, began his weekly broadcast one evening with these words: “I wish that some town in the United States liked and respected our show so much that it would like to change its name to Truth or Consequences.”
The reward for any city willing to do so was to become the site of the 10th-anniversary broadcast of the program, which would put it on the national map in a big way. Hot Springs won the honor. Although the program was canceled decades ago, for the next fifty years Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May to commemorate the broadcast in an annual event called “Fiesta”.
